The Banc de Sang i Teixits [Blood and Tissue Bank] (BST) is the public body of the Department of Health of the Regional Government of Catalonia (Generalitat). Its objective is to ensure the provision and correct use of blood and tissue in Catalonia, and it is the centre of reference for diagnostic immunology and the development of advanced therapies.

Xcelia is the Advanced Therapies Division of the BST. Its mission is to promote human health by developing personalised medicinal products based on cell therapy and tissue engineering. Xcelia's aim is to provide personalised biological drugs and to supply hospitals interested in offering innovative cell and tissue therapies.

ITRT holds a scientific collaboration agreement with BST-Xcelia for the production of mesenchymal stem cells with pharmaceutical standards that are administered to patients with symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee, either as part of a clinical trial, or as normal treatment subject to authorisation and under the oversight of the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices.
