Femoral pseudarthrosis (5)

Patient presented with distal femur pseudarthrosis with significant bone defect and associated osteoporosis that can be seen in the images on the left. The patient carried an osteosynthesis plate that provided precarious stabilisation of the segments.

The treatment consisted of focal curettage and bone graft insertion comprising 188 million bone marrow stem cells cultured with the Aastrom Replicell bioreactor at the Barcelona Blood and Tissue Bank, contained within granules of beta-tricalcium phosphate and autologous plasma clot. Osteosynthesis was completed with additional screws.
Consolidation was observed at 6 months. Longevity of the operation and improved bone defect pattern was confirmed at 12 and 18 months (image on the right).
