Myocardium in Canines and Porcines with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

Pilot Study of the Electrode-Myocardium Interface in Permanent Cardiac Pacing after Local Application of Platelet-Rich Plasma.

Objectives

This ITRT research line aims to generate scientific evidence of the anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects of LP-PRP at the electrode-myocardium interface when applied at the anchoring point of epicardial electrodes.

Methodology

The studies, conducted in canine and porcine models, were coordinated by Dr. Joaquim Delclós, a cardiac surgeon at Hospital Ntra. Sra. del Mar in Barcelona, with the participation of the Veterinary Clinical Hospital and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

Two porcines and two canines were treated. Histological analysis was performed on the electrode-myocardium interface of epicardial electrodes impregnated with or without PRP.

Results

The results evidenced the potent anti-inflammatory effect of leukocyte-poor PRP; fibrosis around the anchoring site was reduced by half compared to cases where PRP was not applied.

Conclusions

The translational interest of these studies lies in the possibility of improving the efficacy and considerably extending the lifespan of epicardial pacemakers used in pediatrics.
